On October 26 at 7:00 pm, The Binion’s Gambling Hall will host a ceremony. During this ceremony Todd Brunson and Carlos Mortensen will become the newest members of the Poker Hall of Fame.
Some of the game’s greatest players and most valuable industry personnel are already part of an elite fraternity of now 52. The two poker pros will join this privileged group of people.
Bruson is still grinding the high stakes cash games as an 1988 inductee and son of Doyle Brunson. Mortenson raked his fame by winning the WSOP Main Event in 2011.
The poker community highly respects both players that have been successful in tournaments and high stakes cash games over the years.
The debate on social media and internet forums sparked about who should be inducted when the 10 nominees were announced recently. Who deserved induction most? Well, many debated if the 2003 WSOP Main Event champ, Chris Moneymaker, deserved induction.
Although Moneymaker doesn’t have a long list of major tournament wins, his big win was the single most important moment in poker history.
Another name that’s brought up often, is Max Pescatori. Each year the limit to induct players is set at two, so the committee did not select the five-time WSOP bracelet winner.
“Doyle’s Son” Not Just the Reason
Todd Brunson is just joining the Poker Hall of Fame because he is Doyle’s son. Only lord knows how much more he’s won in cash games. We know that he at least won $4 million in live tournament earnings.
“Brunson has been a regular for years in some of the highest stakes cash games in Las Vegas. In 2015, he incinerated the heck out of billionaire Andy Beal’s face, winning a reported $5 million in one session at the Bellagio in a heads-up match.”
While studying law at Texas Tech University, Todd learned the game of poker. Oddly enough, his legendary father didn’t teach him the game. He’s probably not regretting the decision of dropping out of college before graduation, to play poker.
One of the Most Likeable Guys on the Poker Circuit
Carlos Mortenson is probably one of the most likeable guys on the poker circuit. In Spain’s poker history, he most likely holds the record for live tournament wins. Throughout his life he won more than $11 million in tournaments.
The WPT and WSOP champ is very popular among the other poker players. Try and find someone who says something negative about the Spaniard.
